Every spring and fall, our competition team holds a trail running race affectionately called the Billy Goat Challenge. It’s a 1.1 mile race, all uphill. We run the same trail in Draper every time, so it’s amazing to see all of these kids’ progress. If you’re hiking the trail, it doesn’t seem that hard. But it’s sneaky! It doesn’t seem that difficult until you’re running it and trying to run it FAST.
We award prizes for the top three runners in each age division. There’s a leader board and records broken each time we have the race. Weather always plays a role too. Sometimes it’s blisteringly hot, sometimes it’s extremely windy and cold. Sometimes it’s gorgeous, just like it was for the Fall 2022 Billy Goat Challenge. It was 50° F, clear, sunny, and breezy.
After everyone was done with their race, we had a small party with pizza, donuts, and hot cocoa. It was a great way to warm up and celebrate the end of our regular season meets.
Congratulations to our amazing athletes who got to the top spots and crushed their previous times. Congrats to runners who broke records on the board. Congrats to our runners who made it onto the leaderboard for the first time. Congrats to everyone who got up that hill without walking.
On to the State XC Championships and Nationals!
